There’s Just a Thought, a track that is beautiful ballad at the edge of sanity. But this version of Gone Daddy Gone is fairly faithful to the original. Of course, while I’m not a fan of most cover versions of songs… mainly because most artists/bands can’t strike the correct balance between being faithful to the OG version while inflecting their own style into it. There’s the cover of the Violet Femmes‘ Gone Daddy Gone, in which Danger Mouse returns to his roots as a musician and producer. What I mean by that is this: even with a song like Crazy, the rest of the album shines. One of things I love about these types of albums is their ability to stand on their own. His performance on this song (and the rest of the album) is so soulful. It’s one of the few melodies I never get tired of hearing. Who do you, who do you, who do you think you are?Ĭrazy is a heavily melodic song that digs deep into your ears and doesn’t come out. You have some smooth and haunting backing vocals, a smooth and funky bassline that bounces and thumps, some Motown tricks with some strings, and lyrics that are absolutely fantastic lyrics. Another example is the title track… but we’ll talk about that in little bit. Well, Crazy is an excellent example of the two-pronged approach this album takes. So where do we start? How about the super-mega-ultra mash hit ex+α hyper edition, Crazy. You have Danger Mouse‘s ability to write (or sample) simple hooks that stick and then there is vocal performance of Cee-Lo Green. The sheer greatness of this album is two-pronged. The two came together and created arguably the best album of the 2000’s St. Gnarls Barkley was the dream team of producer (and DJ) Danger Mouse and rapper Cee-Lo Green. Now a brief introduction for those that don’t know or remember Gnarls Barkley. Let’s put away the guitars for a day and chill with some of the sickest beats of the 2000’s from the hip hop and neo-soul dream team of Gnarls Barkley. Let’s change things up a bit for today and bring the funk and soul. The album is certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number four. The album was released on April 24th, 2006 through Downtown Records, Atlantic Records, and Warner Brothers Records (in the United Kingdom). Elsewhere is the debut studio album from American soul duo Gnarls Barkley.
